It is the same idea of higher standards by which whole societies could live that animated all these modern revolutions, but this time not to create a godly society.
The reforms, first adopted within the Church, were later enacted outside this Church, and eventually outside of all religion. The tendencies and controversies created since the Gregorian reforms played, I believe, a role in the rise of secularism and atheism and in the modern notion of progress. The Gregorian reforms are in effect the first European revolutions.
